Warriors Win.

Warriors 109, Clippers 103

Friday, Oct. 26, 2007, in Los Angeles. Monta Ellis scored 27 points and the Golden State Warriors blew a 23-point lead before Michael Pietrus hit a 3-pointer with 64 seconds left to help beat the Los Angeles Clippers 109-103 on Friday night.

Celebrating his 22nd birthday, Ellis added eight assists and eight rebounds in his second game of the preseason after missing the first five with a neck injury on Oct. 5. Al Harrington scored 21 points for the Warriors, who finished their exhibition slate 5-2 -- including a pair of wins against the Lakers in Hawaii.

Corey Maggette scored 23 points for and Sam Cassell and Chris Kaman added 20 each for Los Angeles, which ended the preseason 4-4.

Brevin Knight did not play because of a strained left hip flexor, and Ruben Patterson sat out with a dislocated pinky on his right hand. But both are expected to be ready for next Friday's rematch against the Warriors at Staples Center, when the Clippers begin their 24th season in Los Angeles.

After falling behind 80-57 on a pair of free throws by Ellis with 5:34 left in the third quarter, the Clippers went on a 13-0 run capped by Cassell's 18-footer and narrowed the gap to 80-70 with 3:06 left in the third.

The Warriors, who failed to shoot 50 percent or better in any of their preseason games, restored their margin to 20 points on Harrington's 3-pointer with 21 seconds left in the third. But they opened the fourth by shooting 0-for-10 from the field and committing four turnovers, while the Clippers went on a 14-2 run and closed to 94-86 with 5:46 left on Kaman's reverse layup off an offensive rebound.

Harrington fouled out with 2:06 to play, and Maggette sank both free throws to pull the Clippers into a 98-all tie. But the rally died there. Austin Croshere sank two free throws, and Pietrus connected on a rainbow from the right sideline for a 103-98 edge. Maggette was called for an offensive charge at the other end, and Ellis responded with a 20-footer with 33 seconds to go.

Golden State assistant coach Keith Smart drew up the plays in the huddle and barked out instructions from the sideline in the team's final tuneup for next Tuesday's season opener against the Utah Jazz in Oakland. Head coach Don Nelson sat in the stands about 20 rows behind the bench, observing the action and comparing notes with Warriors executive Mitch Richmond and assistant coach Larry Riley.

The Warriors will begin the season without swingman Stephen Jackson, who starts serving a seven-game suspension without pay from the NBA. Jackson pleaded guilty in June to a felony count of criminal recklessness for firing a gun outside an Indiana strip club last fall when he was with the Pacers.

Not wanting to risk injuries to key personnel with opening night just around the corner, Nelson rested point guard Baron Davis, center Andris Biedrins and Kelenna Azubuike -- who is penciled in to start in Jackson's place during the suspension. The Warriors used only eight players, including three rookies.
