thought I might as well bump the thread to bring up two relatively unknown artists whose lyrical skills are phenomenal that I just started listening to.
MC Paul Barman - With a masters from Brown, Barman is probably the most educated rapper out there. Along side that, he sounds borderline retarded when he's rapping. But his lyrics, at least the rhymes of them, are brilliant. Whether or not his rapping is enjoyable, he deserves to be mentioned in a best lyricist thread. Almost all his stuff is rare and hard to find, but it's all worth listening to for the humor value.
Louis Logic - A gifted lyricist, who truthfully sounds like a total eminem clone. But he pulls it off with incredibly talented lyrics and songs that often equal the guy he's emulating.

I picked up P.O.S.'s CD, "Audition", and its one of my favorite CD's in a while. The closing track (Audition Mantra) is beautful. True hip-hop; a mixture of lyrical emotion, combined with a beat that's so beautiful, it sounds like a symphony. I'd highly recommend it. Not surprisingly, Slug guest stars and steals the show on a couple tracks.

Kool G Rap is one hell of a lyricist.
As far as the best right now? I like Sean Price. 23 hours of my day are spent wondering what to do with my hour of spare time...

Don't sleep on Tech N9ne's new album, either.
I thought, judging by his Greatest Hits CD, that his next cut would go back to that older, Angellic sound. Not true. If you liked Absolute Power, you'll love Everready. I've been banging this CD since Saturday... and most every track is a banger. ![]() GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS DIE HARD ![]() ![]() |

I just read up on this thread after, for unkown reasons, not noticing it after all this time.
I'll weigh in on some past topics: Immortal Technique is the best all time. John Lennon was the best Beatle. A lot of hip hop is garbage, especially the junk they play on airwaves. In its roots, hip hop is best served by someone like Saul Williams. |

Yep. You're right, really raw. Sounds great at times... sucks others. Overall, above average. |

I can't believe nobody's mentioned APATHY, the leader of the Demigodz.
"I spit, to make the mic like a flammable torch "It's understandable" my mind is a mechanical force And I'm a cannibal my mandible is chewin' ya corpse I'm tyrannical, a vandle of intangible sorts Not a mineral a mammal or an animal, I'm. Metaphysical, the syllables in critical rhymes Flows blowin' off ya limbs like invisible mines Been invincible with rhymes since the biblical times A warlord with a sword from the Mongul Horde Speak the tongue of the lord, to bless my vocal chords They tried to resurrect hip-hop, but faith is gone So I'll take it over by force like Ghengis Khan If you say it ain't raw, you better pray to Allah Cuz I got an arrow that'll travel straight thru the jaw Got breath control, flow like a ship with a sail Divine when I spit, like if I sipped from the grail Cuz I'm immortal" The other thing that's impressive about apathy is that he can freestyle at a lyrical level that few can keep up with when they're writing. ![]() ![]() |

That's because we've never heard of him. Gotta give him a try, tho. Let's see if he's as good as you say. |
|
he's not a guy who packs a lot of substance or versatility into his raps, nor is he that creative, but he can rhyme as well as anybody I've ever heard. I'm not a fan of the gangsta cliche generally, but I get a kick out of his stuff. His partner Celph Titled (who is entertaining, but nothing special) also has some of the most ridiculous punchlines... "leave your whole crew shakin' worse than michael J. fox" "put razors on your feet so you'll cut to the chase" "tear off your arm and make you get down on all threes" Him and Celph were offered a record deal with Interscope but they turned it down for whatever reason. ![]() ![]() |
