What do you think of the USA team? I think that they've picked one too many small forwards and they should have had another big man instead. I can't see Iguodala getting many minutes when you have Durant, James and Anthony there. Andrew Bynum, JaVale McGee or even Josh Smith instead of Iguodala would've made the team more balanced IMO.

I think I had read that Bynum said he wasn't going to play due to some sort of injury. McGee would have been ideal as it looks like only TChandler is a Center.

Still, by far the best team in the tournament they'll be. Lebron, Kobe and Durant right there are amazing. Didn't see Wade there, is he going?

Interesting that Spain has Ibaka as well as the Gasol brothers, so they have some great bigs.

Every 4 yrs, love this time of year! Olympic bball aka all star teams playing for real and playing for pride. Good shi*, good basketball, a must watch.

I like the 2008 team better than this for 2 reasons -- Jason Kidd and more size. DH and Bosh will be missed. 2012 team has more firepower but 2008 had better balance. But as long as T Chandler and Love stay healthy and out of foul trouble [knock on wood] ...should be good enough. Spain could be a problem, seeing as how they were within striking distance in 2008
before Kobe's clutch shots. Their size could be a problem but they don't have Rubio either. Having only one rim protector isn't a good thing, woulda maybe chosen Kendrick Perkins for insurance. I like the Iguadala pick cuz he is the scrappy, defensive specialist needed on a team full of stars. 2010 WC's he was pretty vital in USA's success. Josh Smith over him would've been aight too. I think the chemistry for USA will be pretty good too cuz many of the players are returning from 2008 and 2010.

Griffin is gone. I guess Lebron and Carmelo will be spending a bit of time at power forward with Love playing a fair bit at centre. Anthony Davis is a good pick for future investment but he will get monstered by bigger and more experienced men who can use the international rules to their advantage. Josh Smith would've been a perfect choice to replace Griffin.

USA should have no problem in the olympics. Durant is on a mission like no other. I truly enjoy seeing him play and reading how humble he is as a person.

Spain should be the only legitimate threat (unfortunately no Rubio for them), but they got some good bigs (Gasol Brothers and Ibaka).

Team USA looked very beatable vs Brazil, even down 10 early on. Commentator kept saying it's a "wake up call." Dude, haven't they had enough wake up calls. 2004, defeats in 2006, etc. Weaknesses I saw were defensive rebounding / boxing out and a lack of discipline as far as not enough post play and settling too much on jump shooting. Vs Spain they may need to go with a Love / Chandler lineup to matchup cuz I'm not convinced Lebron, Melo or KD can guard whichever Gasol Chandler doesn't guard. Woulda preferred they took another big like maybe Cousins instead of Harden. ANyways they better clean up their deficiencies and get that engine finely tuned or they may be looking at an upset in London.

On the subject of original Dream Team v this current team and even the previous U.S.A. team that also had Lebron and a few others that are on this one:

The other countries' teams are much better and the standard internationally is far better now than back then, that is why the original Dream Team dominated like they did.

I really do think that players like Lebron, Kobe, Wade and Durant compare real well to Jordan, Pippen, Magic and Bird. In fact, Magic and Bird were past it and not what they were when in their prime, so I think that if you add Dwight and Bynum (giving the best at each position currently of the nba), this current team is at some positions better even. Sounds like blasphemy, but I think that is the case.

Those were the days.

We came back few years ago, only to fail again...now we're playing teams like Iceland. #-o

Anyway, it is true that European, well South American as well, teams have got quite better, so it is getting harder and harder for Dream Teams to live up to their name of Dream Team. I hope it will be interesting competition at least.

Be nice to have a discussion on the original Dream Team v the best team the U.S.A. could put together right now.

To me, I think if you add a healthy Derrick Rose, Wade, Dwight, Bynum and Bosh to Kobe, CP, Deron, Carmelo, Durant and Lebron, add one more player, I think Love, that team is better than the original Dream Team.

Yes, heresy to some, but I believe the speed and athleticism is just too much. Magic and Bird were past it in 1992 and that is huge.

PGs - Magic and Stockton v CP and Deron (add DRose as well) - Think scoring is better with CP and Deron, as well as defense, but D not by much, as Stockton was a very good defender, Magic not so much. If you want to include Rose, then Rose outruns and jumps both Magic and Stockton like nothing. Rose could score at will also.

SGs - Jordan and Drexler v Kobe and Wade - Epic to say the least. Jordan was 29 years old and in his prime and though Kobe is 34 years old now, he is as smooth as ever. Jordan wins out, but Kobe sticks with him most of the time in all facets. Drexler was a great player, but Wade is more. Wade has done more in his career than what Drexler did up to that point. Wade is more explosive, faster and more allround, though Drexler could do it all himself. Drexler was a pretty good defender, but he couldn't stick with Wade.

SFs - Pippen, Bird and Mullin v Lebron, Durant and Carmelo - Firstly, Bird was past it with a back that could barely move, but even if you have the man in his prime, the current SFs still are better. Pippen was about 25 years old, so not in his prime yet, but even if he was, he was not as good as either Lebron or Durant. The current Sfs could just do more and are definately faster, stronger and more athletic. Even comparing Mullin and Carmelo, Carmelo scores even more than Mullin in his prime years and in more ways.

PFs - Malone and Barkley v Bosh and Love - The older guys are better, but not as multitalented as the two current ones. Malone and Barkely have the strength for sure, but not the shooting. Rebounding is about equal as well.

C - Robinson and Ewing v Dwight and Bynum - The older guys are more skilled, though not quite as strong. Robinson and Ewing could do it in almost every way offensively, as well as defensively. Dwight and Bynum are enaring their primes, but still have to develop a bit more offensively. The rebounding and shotblocking are quite equal, but Robinson and Ewing were a bit more mobile, Robinson especially would run around Dwight and Bynum all night. Still, in the team context, all Dwight and Bynum would need to do is rebound, block shots and score on dunks and putbacks.

Overall I think the current players have too much speed, athleticism and allround skill and would win a game between these two teams.

I see where you're coming from migs, and Kobe Bryant had a very similar sentiment earlier this month. But I must say that I disagree... especially on the grounds of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird being "too old" to still compete at a high level. Bird and Johnson had games built around their skillset, knowledge, quick decision-making, and life-long natural savvy. I would wager that neither Bird nor Magic ever dominated the competition by way of jaw-droppping athleticism. I can't even recall a single key play where one of them imposed themselves physically by way of speed, strength, or leaping ability. At most, Johnson used his height to create instant mismatches with the other team's point guards... but height doesn't really age (at least, not until you're 60 and start shrinking). Point being, the whole "Bird and Magic were past their prime" thing... it doesn't really land with me. To prove it, lets check their statlines from a year before the Olympics:

MAGIC JOHNSON, 1990-91'

19.4 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 12.5 APG
1.3 SPG, 0.20 BPG
In 37.1 MPG

LARRY BIRD, 1990-91'

19.4 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 7.2 APG
1.8 SPG, 0.97 BPG
In 38.0 MPG

Best years of their career? Absolutely not. But that being said, Bird and Magic still put up more impressive overall stats than someone like... oh, for instance, Kobe Bryant.

As far as position-by-position, I don't think its a close competition. The big man spots aren't even debatable; Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, Patrick Ewing, and David Robinson are head-and-shoulders better than anything on Team USA now. Even if Dwight Howard (the current most dominant big man) were in tow, like your ficticious roster, can you honestly claim that he's superior to any of the 4 men listed above? I also don't think you give Malone and Barkley their fair dues, shooting-wise. Barkley could hit any shot on the floor and Malone shot perhaps the most automatic midrange jumper ever (hence his spot at #2 on the all-time scoring list). Love and Bosh can hit the 3, sure... but I wouldn't exactly call them better shooters than Charles Barkley.

Both guard spots are likewise tough to argue. Michael Jeffery Jordan in his prime is the trump card in any argument, wouldn't you agree? Especially with a Hall-of-Famer like Clyde Drexler backing him up. And lets not forget: John Stockton, statistically, is the greatest point guard of all-time. Magic Johnson, analytically, is the greatest point guard of all-time. I dig your zest for the modern crop of NBA ballers... and, yes, if this were a combine contest to see who could run the fastest, jump the highest, and bench press the most weight, Deron Williams and Chris Paul would definitely win that discussion. But in a basketball game? Its pretty impossible to beat a PG tandem of Stock and Magic.

Small forward is the only position in question... and, rest assured, it is ONLY because Larry Bird was suffering from such horrible back pain. If Bird were on that team 3 or 4 years earlier, even this position would be spoken for.

To me, the 1992 Dream Team is exactly what Marv Albert labeled it as: the greatest team ever assembled in the history of team sports.

Watching USA vs Lithuania

wow if they play like this vs Spain... good luck. I don't know what Coach K is doing. To many 1on1 players making 1on5 plays.

Let's see a lineup with Durant Kobe Carmelo what do you think will happen? They aren't used to playing D and they're not used to passing. Ball movement looking crappy. Post play? Almost non-existent. Jump shot after jump shot. Also just think it's retarded that Anthony Davis is on the team when he has zero impact. Why not bring in a Greg Monroe, Josh Smith, Cousins... someone who'll actually play and bring size.

Is Chandler injured? He's hardly played.

this isn't the 'sexy' lineup but you have better D, more size and more willing passers...

Paul
Kobe
Iggy
Love or Lebron
Chandler

When Chandler is off the floor there is zero rim protection

U.S. certainly challenged by Lithuania and that was good to see.

Australia with a great last second on a three win against Russia.

What I don't understand is why Russia finished first in Group B ahead of Brazil when Brazil scored more points overall and had less point differential. Same thing with Australia ending lower than Spain when they also had less point differential. Someone know why?

As it stands Australia will be eliminated against USA in the quarters when they could have gone against France and had a chance to advance.

Hey Migya. I think Russia finished on top of Brazil because they beat Brazil and Spain finished on top of Australia because they beat Australia.
