People were asleep at the wheel. The cities and coasts in California are becoming increasingly isolated as bastions of tolerance, as the conservative population has increased. In addition, there are more Catholics in California now, which by default means more conservative anti-gay kind of thinking. All of this combined with Mormon led financing from outside the state led to the passing of Prop 8. It's inevitable that it will get overturned though.

Thank you Pat!!!

Man, I didnt think anyone was actually going to discuss WHY the voters voted the way they did...........instead of blaming the big bad government.

This vote was not an up or down decision on the legality of gay marriage, but rather a narrow ruling about whether or not the the voting procedure was legal under California's constitution.

This liberal court ruled not closely, 5-1, on this.

The broader issue of gay marriage was not addressed at all.

For those who don't know, California has an odd and pretty unique system of propositions where voters are expected to rule on all sorts of complex monetary and special-interest issues. We have to wade through all sorts of misleading advertising and, frankly, these are usually issues our well-paid representatives should be addressing.

Interestingly, besides the usual conservatives and religious people voting against gay marriage, the vote was actually decided by minorities, the very same people who eagerly voted for Obama. Supposedly, there was a great deal of opposition to this by African-Americans and Hispanics.

In this case, to be fair, the vote wasn't the result of a right wing cabal or anything, just prejudiced people from all political spectrums.
