In typical GoldenStWarriors fashion, I thought we could kill the dull air of the offseason by engaging in a time-honored thread created by forum legend, The Pestilence. Pest started this idea in 2007 with the simple notion that - since nothing really occurs between the Finals and the Draft/Free Agency - that rather than discuss a boat load of tired, SportsCenter topics where everything to be said has been said (*cough* "where Dwight is going"), we could all play a little game where several prominent board members commit to a fantasy draft of sorts where the ultimate goal is to assemble a winning NBA team with an immediate championship in mind.

The premise of the game is fairly simple: it's 2013, David Stern is retiring, and Adam Silver - in an unfounded maneuver that would be totally opposed in real life - has determined that the distribution of talent among NBA teams has reached such an unfair peak, that all GMs will be gathered to re-draft the players of the league in the style of a fantasy draft.

For those who have been apart of this process before, this will all be review. But for those newbies who haven't yet participated, the rules and guidelines are as follows:

1) Depending on the number of members willing to play, the teams will be divided up fairly so that everybody has an equal amount of squads to focus on. If we get 6 guys willing to play, every person will look after 5 teams. 10 users is ideal (for 3 teams a piece), but that almost never happens.

2) Drafting occurs in a serpentine fashion, unlike the 2nd round of the actual NBA draft. For example, whoever gets the first pick in the 1st round will receive the last pick of the 2nd round, followed by the 1st in the 3rd round, and so on and so forth. Drafts last 13 rounds so that all roster spots are filled. The 1st round is to determine a head coach, the order will be completely randomized by a 3rd party site, and is unrelated to the rest of the draft (which will take place in the actual order of the 1st round of the NBA draft).

3) Teams who have traded their 1st round pick this year will be slotted in the spot they were supposed to draft in. For example, Utah has Golden State's pick this year, which will be the 21st. Therefore, the Warriors' pick in the redistro draft will be at 21, while Utah's pick is in the lottery.

4) Teams are being drafted with the primary focus of WINNING A CHAMPIONSHIP IMMEDIATELY. This means that drafting with the strategy of a keeper NBA draft is NOT the goal: Anthony Davis may be a top 10 pick when thinking about the future, but it would be an utter waste to select him with the 7 pick THIS year (as he likely won't be a top NBA player in the 2013-'14 season). Likewise, Kobe Bryant won't play another 5 years in the league, but he's still a top player NOW, so he's worthy of an early selection.

5) This draft is time-sensitive, gentlemen: the WORST part about these threads is waiting for somebody to make a selection while they've disappeared for 5 days. Because of this, a selection for your team MUST be made within 48 hours of your team being on the clock. Two days is ample time for you to log on and check the board when you've made a commitment to this game. If after 48 hours, you have not made a pick, than the league commissioner (ie, ME) will make the selection for you. And PLEASE, if you think you're going to withdraw from this draft for ANY reason, DO NOT volunteer to participate. It's extremely frustrating to have to take over a team that's been f'd over by a guy who didn't really wanna play to begin with.

6) Trades are permitted and encouraged at any point in and after the draft; HOWEVER, since there are a fixed number of picks, players and future picks must be dealt through even numbers to keep rosters full. This means that whomever selects LeBron James CANNOT trade him for 3 players; all trades must have an equal number of people. 1 player can be traded for 1 player, 2 for 2, 3 for 3, etc. You may also NOT trade between your own set of teams.

7) Following the draft, team owners will assemble their rosters in the style of NBA 2K Franchise mode: meaning, GMs will appoint each of their players a role on the team. You must designate a starting 5, a 6th man, 3 role players, 3 bench warmers (which can also be designated as "prospects"), and ONE of your players MUST be designated as the star whom your team is built around.

8) Once the draft has been completed, trades are finalized, and roles have been assigned, victory will be determined in a separate thread from the draft, where all GMs will vote for whom they believe the most dangerous roster is. All users will have 100 points that they will dole out to teams BESIDES theirs (yes, voting for yourself is prohibited). These points can either be submitted to me privately, via PM, or (the preferred technique) posted in the discussion thread, with explanations as to why you felt certain teams were good and certain teams were poor. Evaluations are TOTALLY SUBJECTIVE, but try to keep it realistic, gentlemen. And taking the coaches into account is a HUGE part of why a roster may or may not work. Mike D'Antonni would boost up a guy like Stephen Curry, but Marc Gasol would not be able to hang in his run-and-gun style of offense. Choose your coaches wisely.

If there are any other questions. I'm happy to answer them as they come up. This drafting thread typically takes at least a month to complete (sometimes 2), so please - when you commit to this draft, be prepared to check the board at least once a day to ensure that you're not on the clock. While I'll do my best to change the thread title to alert members to their being on the clock, I can't promise I'll always do it. After 24 hours, I'll PM you to see what the hold up is. If you haven't made a pick after 48, I'll make it for you - and depending on how nice I feel, you may get a good pick... or you may get Lou Amundson ;) Ideally, I'd like to get 5 guys, drafting for 6 teams, but if we get an extra man, we can do 6 guys drafting for 5 teams. Let's see how many peeps are down to put their bball wisdom on the line!

Now... WHOSE DOWN TO PLAY THE REDISTRO GAME?!?

I'm in, but it would be great if we could concentrate on only one team. Kind of loses a bit of it's charm when you do it for 5-6 teams.

Maybe we could all pick one team, and then when the turn comes to those teams that weren't picked, we all vote on who should be their pick, or something like that. Just a suggestion.

yeah i think the least amount of teams would be ideal. I think I can figure something out where I input the "amount" of users is to 2k13's fantasy draft, and when it comes to teams that we don't have control over, 2K will just make an auto-pick.

Aw, you guys, it's fun to build multiple squads!

Plus, if we all vote on auto-picks, that has the potential to be messy: it will stretch out the draft time (cause instead of waiting for 1 guy to draft, we'll be waiting for 5-6 guys to all chime in) and some guys might be trying to save a guy for their next pick and hesitant to bring him up in hopes that everyone forgets about him (so the auto drafted teams don't have a chance of being competitive).

Really, this draft isn't anywhere near as quick as it sounds. Having 5 or 6 teams keeps everyone involved.

It'd be nice if miggy or someone else joined us so that we could all build 5 teams instead of 6. Or, better yet, if we could get 10 members together, we'd all get 3 teams. But very rarely will 10 guys all commit to an online draft, so that's doubtful.

We have the minimum number of users, so if no one else joins by tonight, I'll put our names through a randomizer in the order that we joined (1 for me, 2 for BF, 3 for 8th, etc). Then I'll post a potential draft order and if everyone thinks it fair, we'll go ahead and start drafting this weekend. Sound kosh?

Maybe if guys who aren't interested in taking any team would at least be interested to drop by and say who they think is the next best player available. I know it's a stretch, but that way there wouldn't be any irregularities.

Though, I don't see why would you want to try to skip a player, by the time it's your turn, you might just pass it on to the guy with a better squad. That wouldn't do you a favor.

Or, we can put time for the voting, who votes up to that point, we go with that...not necessary for all to vote.

I mean, I suppose it's up to the people who want to play. I'm fine handling 5-6 teams and if anyone doesn't want their share of squads, I suppose I could pick them up too...

Great thread 32, but to be honest, I work long hours and study part time as well so I probably will give this a miss. If you do need one more to make it 10 participants, I'll be in, but right now you all look set with six people.

I'd be fine with that as well...but, 32 likes the idea of having multiple attempts to make the best team, it seems. ::razz:
