The Milwaukee Bucks continued to aggressively reshape their roster Wednesday by beating out several teams to acquire New Orleans/Oklahoma City center Jamaal Magloire, according to NBA front-office sources.

In a trade that will be announced later Wednesday, Milwaukee has agreed to send swingman Desmond Mason, its 2006 first-round pick and cash considerations to the Hornets for Magloire, an East All-Star in 2004.

The Bucks, according to sources, felt they needed a more physical presence on their front line to aid the development of No. 1 overall pick Andrew Bogut and the recently re-signed Dan Gadzuric.

Given Milwaukee's logjam of swingmen after retaining Michael Redd, trading for Jiri Welsch and signing Bobby Simmons, a trade involving Mason between now and the February deadline was somewhat inevitable. This one gives the Bucks an opportunity to play Magloire and Bogut together, with Simmons starting at the other forward spot. The Bucks also have Gadzuric and Joe Smith in what suddenly looks like a well-rounded frontcourt rotation.

The Hornets have been shopping Magloire for months as part of their own makeover, which accelerated in February when Baron Davis, another former All-Star, was dealt to Golden State.

Coach Byron Scott denied earlier this week that Magloire was available, but the Hornets  rebuilding around the embryonic backcourt of Chris Paul and J.R. Smith and displaced from its home base in New Orleans for at least a season - seized the chance to add another 2006 first-rounder to their own and an athletic swingman with ties to the team's new home state.

Mason, entering his sixth season out of Oklahoma State, carries a career scoring average of 12.9 points per game and averaged a career-best 17.2 points last season.

Magloire played only 23 games in 2004-05 because of a fractured ring finger but averaged 13.6 points and 10.3 rebounds in the previous season. The five-year veteran's 19 points in the 2004 All-Star Game led the East.

My opinion on the trade: it is not that significant, maglore hasnt proved that he is an efficient center without bDiddy. Mason cant hit a three to save his life and his ball handling is nothing to be proud of. OK player for and OK player.

I'd say Magloire's a tad better than Mason, just because a good center is rarer than a good guard, but you're right, Newman... nothing to parade about either way.

I agree with both of you about the skills of both players but Player32 is right, Magloire is more valuable just because he's a center. And he'll play in the east again. I think Milwaukee is the winner in this trade.

The Hornets do it again! Why would they trade their pretty good center for a swingman, which there are many around the league............ They should have tried to get someone like Nene and then they would still have a good center to work with

The trade is not that bad, the hornets also got Milwaukee's first round pick, so it's Desmond Mason and another player. It's an investment.

Your right TMC, if the Bucks don't make the playoffs, which is very likely, the Hornets could have 2 high draft picks next year. That is if the pick from the Bucks is for next year's draft

Eh, nothing's gonna fix the Hornets for at least 3 or 4 years... they have fallen to Toronto's level... *shudder*

with a lottery Center that can contibute immediately (a bogut type), the Hornets would be respectable again and good at all 5 positions

JR Smith is VERY average (nothing special), Desmond Mason is basically the same player (they can both DUNK... and thats about it), Chris Paul will be good, PJ Brown is decent (but, like everyone else, average at best), and Chris Anderson is a helluva shot blocker (but good luck when it comes to much else). A lottery center wont fix their team... especially not one Bogut's level (Andrew Bogut's not that impressive to me, to be perfectly honest. I wish the kid well, but I dunno if he'll make it as one of the league's dominant big men... hope he does, though). New Orleans's biggest disaster isn't the hurricane; it's the Hornets.

JR Smith is only 19 years old, he should be average right now, otherwise he'd be LeBron, and they also have Kirk Snyder, Lampe, etc... Add to that two new rookies and a lot of cap room next summer.

This season they'll be awful, but it could be a good team in a couple of years.

Like every team, the hornets need to develop and keep the good players for many years. That does not always happen

Eh, New Orleans talent isn't that great to begin with. Development doesn't always turn average mortals into Supermen. Sometimes, you actually need talent.
