Gay Basketball: NBA & Warriors hold 1st Gay Night
The team most associated with Tim Hardaway and his “I hate gay people” comment, the Golden State Warriors, are hosting their first ever official Gay and Lesbian night at Oracle Arena on March 11, 2010 when the Warriors take on the Portland Trailblazers.
The move leverages the strong gay and lesbian community in the Bay Area, which includes Oakland, San Francisco, and San Jose.
The historic event is marked by several special events throughout the day. (Purchase tickets to the events)
Participants not only get to watch Golden State take on the Portland Trailblazers that night, but can partake in an open gym at Oracle Arena earlier in the day. The open court play will allow ticket holders to play basketball on an NBA court. The open court play is hosted by the Rockdogs, a gay basketball team based out of San Francisco.
Other events that day include a special tailgating event, lounge access before the game, an special LGBT event t-shirt to mark the night, and seating with other gay and lesbian basketball fans.
Additionally, the National Anthem will be performed by the Oakland Gay Men’s Chorus, and there will be a halftime performance by Cheer SF, a local gay cheerleading squad.
This is the first LGBT community night with the Golden State Warriors, but isn’t the NBA’s first. The Philadelphia 76ers hosted the first Gay and Lesbian community night in 2004. While the Toronto Raptors held an LGBT night dubbed Rainbow Hoops, a lesbian recreational basketball league in Toronto on February 23, 2007.
Tickets to the all-day events are just $25. If you are interested in event details or purchasing tickets, go to the Rockdog’s official website. Portions of the ticket proceeds goes to support the Positive Resource Center and the San Francisco Rockdogs.

Good for them ...
Its just a shame it took the WARRIORS FRONT OFFICE this long to come up with the concept!!! They could of been tapping into this market years ago!!! |

Is this for real; or is this some kind of a joke?
SF Cheer? Rocketdogs? It all sounds a bit dubious. Seriously, fans of all backgrounds (regardless of ethnic origin, ideology, orientation, etc.) are always welcome at a Warrior game; this just seems odd and not real. |

It makes total sense to reach out to a substantial area demographic. Good for the Warriors.

Anything to get more people into the arena to watch games. It looks like the Warriors organization has to start having special nights to make sure their attendance is up.

Good for us. But I wonder what the crowd is going to be like that night. Are the increased gay attendees going to outnumber the no-show homophobes?
And not to be Ms. Nit-Picky, but the thread title is wrong. As the article states Philly and Toronto have done this before in the NBA. This is just the Warriors first time. Mr. Rand-McAlly
Jeg er ikke enig.... Jeg kan godt lide at spise din mors gris ben. |
Good for the Warriors, Or Good for People who are FINE with discussing there sexuality
Actually i totally disagree with this being a actual issue, The Bay Area has the largest community of Gays and probably also the largest Community of Gay Sympathsizers! I don't think there's as many BIGOTS n HOMOPHOBES in the Bay Area then you make it out like to be! |
