hey I've been thinking about trying to get a small side job hosting or maintaining a web-site.

truth time - I know:
-very little html code,
-very little C++,
-very little linux code,

but I'm willing to learn, and I generally pick up computer stuff very very quickly. can anyone give me some guidance? I knew this guy a few years ago that was making money either admin'ing or webmaster'ing and the dude wasn't all that good with computers. figure I could do it too. I'm talking like minimum wage, just something to pay for a beer or two on the weekends, maybe build the resume a little bit.

I'd prefer to work with something linux based (aren't a lot of servers linux now?) since thats the OS-type I use (and I'm trying to learn more about it anyway), but it doesn't really matter.

I've done some light research, but most of the results I get are either for paid online survey takers, or for get-rich-quick-schemes. no thank you. oh yeah, and I'd be willing to pay to take a course and become "certified" if that what we're dealing with

My Advice & Listen Up! You don't want to lead down this path. Go have a look in the mirror and see the young fit n Healthy guy who's going to turn into Springfields very own comicbook store owner. . . . . . YOU NEED 2 get out there and get a gym membership. Seriously it's not cool going to bars n telling a girl u live with your mum writing code for the webmasting of a online Viagra ordering site. Just make me the promise First off if u go down this path of Krispey Kreme eating and 3am of World of Warcraft tournaments. That u try n get to the gym and do some push ups. If not it's always good to perve on the girls on the treadmills. BoinG BoinG!

LITTLE HELP?
To redirect the thread:

If you want some advise, learn php, mysql, javascript, css, HTML - I can't believe someone wants to get into the industry w/o knowing it, no offense, but I and any other web developer can write html in their sleep. Learning Linux languages isn't all that important since you can just get a GUI.

That might sound like a lot of languages, but once you pick a couple of them up then the rest will be easy - start with HTML and Javascript.

Many servers are Linux but Windows servers are becoming more popular because of the wider range of development tools and the ease. Start with Windows and learn the basics of programming and running a server, then graduate to Linux.

The most in demand jobs are php programmer jobs (serverside programming). I would just search around some of my favorite sites and look for "PHP Programmer wanted" links or something like that - I see them all the time.

If you are serious and know how to use bitorrents, download Lynda php tutorial or anything from the Lynda.com series - they are good video base tutorials that cover almost everything. And check out www.w3schools.com - awesome free resource for programmers.

hope this helps, if you have anymore Qs then PM me.

Oh, and don't listen to Pawno - I never heard of anyone getting paid to do push ups. And taking advise from a virgin on what girls like is never a good idea (sorry Pawno). Girls like employment and even more they like sustainable employment which is what you'll have if you get into this area.

No offense taken JREED but women definately don't like grown men who still live with there Mommas & that my friend is 90% of the web programming community. Sure it may be good to have money n webhosting can pay pretty well. But i'd rather be a construction worker with big muscles and a wife who packs my lunchbox every morning. First i need the wife. But i've already started on the muscles :-)

You are right living with parents = deal breaker...

90% huh? And you know this to be fact? That's a strong claim there Pawno, I don't live with my mom and I personally know 5 other web developers that don't live with there parents. I also know countless other people that work in other IT related fields and I can't recall one that lives with his/her parents.

I'd rather have a good job with a 401 k, medical, dental, excellent pay and room for advancement apposed to still working construction (Which I did for two years - roofing and framing) for less pay, abusing my body of which I was provided no health care for and virtually no room for advancement. I could see being a contractor but all that college might get in the way of your strict workout regimen.

I want to retire some day, how about you?

lol, being a man is more about providing for your family then looking good with your shirt off. Ask girls what is more important - a guy who is going some where in life and his career, has goals and makes a good living or a six pack?

Some advice: The girls that say a six pack - [edit: try to] fuuck em and leave em, you don't want to wind up with that kind of shallow slut.

For the record JReed. I'm not in construction. I'm actually a debt collector and ironically i still live at Homes with my parents :) i just wanted to say also whilst we are on the topic of internet stereotyping u being a tech guy aka NERD! It explains so much as to why your a Niner guy n not a raider fan. You seem to have a very logical thought pattern and i respect alot of what u got to say. But judging from some other aspects u don't appear to have a sense of humour. Or it's lacking. . . . . . . . .It's all good though man. I still love u. <just wish u was playing in one of the fantasy football or hoops leagues we got cause if there's one cat i'd like to lube. It's u>

while I am not a exactly a web programmer I have been in the IT field for over 13 years. It is a tough climate right now in terms of employment. IT has been hit harder than most fields but there are still a lot of jobs out there. Especially on the contracting side.

Learning a programming language or two or three certainly gives you a marketable skill. Jreed gave you some great advice on how to do that.

Wish you the best of luck my friend.

get money. get bitches. repeat... lol
Image

yeah those two were really married... Salman be spitting mad game son!

anywho,
Thanks for the advice, I guess another reason why is that I'm applying to dental school and I'd like to boost my resume.

I happened to do really really bad in my C++ programing class as an undergrad and since it was the only computer class I took, and I have nothing else on my resume, it looks like I don't know shiit about computers. I'd like to do something besides an intro to computers course, and webmaster stuff seems cool.

I'm really not looking to progress into anything beyond entry-level (or even "sub-entry-level")

Your right some times my posts come off as a little defensive and/or angry, this is usually not my intent, I've got a pretty dry and sarcastic sense of humor. But I love your honesty Pawno, wish more people could be like you (in the regard), sadly, vaaaary few are.

Actually if you met me in real life you'd say something to the effect of "This guys an IT professional?" or when my classmates look at me in the beginning of a semester they likely think to themselves "this guy'll last about a week." (I've got a 3.8 GPA bitches!) Because unlike many of my colleges, I don't really fall into that stereotype - probably having a lot to do with how and where I was raised (poor and in a place actually called "crack alley"), ie I'm not used to not being the smartest person in the room/house/neighborhood (wow that use of a double negative, essentially making my statement some what of an oxymoron, doesn't support it's meaning much...lol), college was a huge culture shock for me.

Enough babbling... I'd love to be in a fantasy league but every time I join one, I either forget about it or my schedule is just too inconsistent; Much like my involvement with this board. Maybe I'll join one with you next season Pawno so I can try to raise your football IQ that has been diminished from being a Raider fan for so long.
