Sure, it is changed a lot. Most songs are. However, it was originally sung by Bobbie Gentry, one of the first country women. You can change it all you want, it is still country.

is that the song that goes :
"Billy Joe McAlister jumped off the Tallahassee bridge", that song is pretty cool, one of those surprise MP3's that i have on my itunes. The only thing thats different then wat ur say is mine is by someone named Bobbie Gentry.

I remember that cornball song too. It was an AM radio staple by the time you or I would have been aware of it.
