I'm just wondering if anybody else has been watching Nashville Star. It is a country version of American Idol, and I am into it. It is in the finals right now. There are two REALLY good ones, Melissa Lawson and Gabe Garcia.

Gabe is the best. Here are a few of his songs. He is country through and through. He can be AMAZING if he keeps going.

I doubt anybody else will care, but, whatever. I like him.

Yep, the best music ever.

What kind of music do you listen to, Captain?

On another note, my guy didn't win. He was the best country singer there. The lady who won it is a great singer, but not quite country enough for me. I'm happy for her. She and Gabe will both do well in country music, as long as she realizes that she needs to country up a little more.

I can dig old school country like Hank Williams Sr. there's something very raw and real about it that cuts through genres, but the new country/rock gives me a rash.

Very true, I like Willie Nelson, Waylon, Conway Twitty, stuff like that. I just refuse to listen to more recent stuff.

I tend to go for the country blues stuff. Rev. Gary Davis, Big Bill Brozny, Mississippi John Hurt, Doc Watson. Some Bluegrass stuff is cool too.

That stuff is pretty cool too JackAttack. I guess I just dislike mainstream country.

Like JackAttack said, some of the bluegrass stuff is cool and the old stuff, but that is not what they play on the radio or on shows like Nashville star. Their focus is on that Tim McGraw/Carrie Underwood crap that is awful.

It depends on where you are geographically. If you go to Texas or Oklahoma, they never play the normal stuff. Almost all of it is that deep south music that I like. Of course, I do like the regular stuff, too.

There are two country stations in the Bay Area.

95.7 is mainly the Tim McGraw/Carrie Underwood.
95.3 is much more mid-western country.

Isn't 95.3, KRTY? That was all the Tim McGraw crap, they're not any better. The Bay used to have a good country station, it was like 89.3 or something like that and they only played old school country, but it's gone now. Oh well I don't listen to it anyway.

Nice, glad to see that you know what it is.

But, no, they really dont play a whole lot of Tim McGraw, at least not now. They do some, of course, but not as much as 95.7. 95.3 plays a lot of the country that you never hear. Some of the young artists as they are coming up.

Yeah, but I don't like any of that stuff. The only country I've liked recently, I'm not even sure it's considered country is KT Tunstall. Otherwise country died in the 60's.

there are some "new grass" bands that are pretty good.
Hot Buttered Rum String Band, Yonder Mountain String Band, and the
songwriting of Steve Earle is pretty cool..

but to be honest, I probably choose this kind of music least to listen to. I'm more of a jazz, reggae, funk, blues, latin and african musician so that's what I like.

I just can't get into any of that fake cowboy Toby Keith wave the flag bs!
