Jerry West set to join Warriors front office, according to multiple NBA sources
POSTED BY TIM KAWAKAMI ON MAY 19TH, 2011 AT 11:19 PM | CATEGORIZED AS NBA, WARRIORS
Jerry West, one of the most respected executives in NBA history, has agreed to join the Warriors front office in a non-decision-making, advisory role, multiple NBA sources confirmed tonight.
An announcement is expected within a few days.
West’s exact title has not yet been formalized, but he is expected to be reporting to co-owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber and possibly act as a sounding board in many areas.
The addition of an icon like West is another aggressive and surprising move by Lacob, who brought in agent Bob Myers last month as his GM-apparent.
West and Myers have a long relationship via West’s close friend Arn Tellem, Myers’ mentor in the agenting industry.
West, a Hall of Famer player, was the Lakers’ GM from 1982 to 2000, when the franchise won 7 titles.
West also was GM of the Memphis Grizzlies from 2002 to 2007, and was a consultant for a few years after that.
He was voted NBA executive of the year in 1995 and 2004.
Much more on this to come.
Late-night summary: If Lacob wanted to show he’s seriously in this to shake up the Warriors’ culture, he has done it.
You don’t get any more big-time than adding Jerry West to your front office.

Nice hire. I can't imagine he will be more than a consultant, but this is a great move and brings some respectabillity to the franchise if nothing else. Culture is definitely changing for the better.

This! took the words right out of my... keyboard!? Anyways this is with Myers obviously being groomed as our GM and us in the market for a new coach we are now under going extreme change throughout the organization, and I love it! This along with the Myers deal is a strong indicator that this owner group know exactly what they are doing and know how to do it! |

For those wondering about Joe Lacob being like Chris Cohan in any capacity...does this and the Myers hiring answer your question?
I have two NBA teams: The Golden State Warriors and whoever faces off against the Los Angeles Lakers because I'm a 100% Warrior fan and a 100% Laker Hater

The Myers hire was praised by everyone in the industry as brilliant. He's got super-close ties to Arn Tellem and the gang, which is basically a backdoor to every worthwhile free agent on the market. Jerry West is a super amazing respectability hire, but his name means more to fans than his presence will to actually winning free agents. Still, definitely worth being happy about. Now just hope they get the right coach.

One thing that has irritated me previously about Jerry West & Kevin McHale is that they traded the 2 key cornerstones of there respected GM OPERATIONS (KG In Minesota) & (GASOL in Memphis) & sent those mens packing to the franchises that there original loyalties lie with (McHale=BOSTON) (West=L.A)
So in saying that... when I read that West is joining us in a "Non Decision Making" capacity then I jumped with joy knowing that the chances of Stephen Curry being traded to the Lakers for a bag of Nachos & a Coors Lite decreased significantly :-) |
