This past week, the NBA ordered its security forces in all 29 cities to come up with a list of clubs and other night spots that should be made off-limits to players.
The shooting death of Darrent Williams is a motivating factor in the directive.
Once the clubs are identified, with the help of local law enforcement, the league will send a directive to teams mandating that players avoid those spots or be subject to a substantial fine.
well, at least this means stephen jackson won't be getting himself killed

Shouldn't the league provide guidance, but not a directive of where to go or not go? I would rather the league set guidelines on public behavior and then let the players determine where they should or should not go. Big Brother should be one's internal regulator/governor not David Stern.

Stern cannot do so. If he does, the NBAPA will sue the league before the memo reaches the teams.

I have to imagine this is patently illegal. Can you imagine the uproar if, say, Walmart tried to tell its employees where they could go outside of work hours?

David Stern has taken the NBA brand international, made the owners and players much money, but is becoming a lifestyle fascist. Previously, he had instituted a dress code, and now he wants to restrict player access to nightclubs? There will be a backlash if he tries to do this. Americans, in general, want maximal liberty and minimal institutional intrusion in our daily lives.

It is illegal. He may force all the rules he wants for the games and even when they train and... well, everything related to the rules. But that's all. He cannot force people to only go to certain places or avoid others. They're not Stern's slaves, even if he seems to think they are.

There's no way this will get passed. The entire league will hold up Stern if he tries to pull this kind of garbage. I hope the bastards pushes for it and ends up getting fired.
